Nigel De Jong v Shabby Alonso

Commiserations to Nigel De Jong and the Dutch, going down to Spain 1-0 in the World Cup final. But the midfield hardman sure left his mark on the match (and Alonso's chest no doubt...)

Funnily enough, this is remarkably similar to an incident involving City and Liverpool — Xabi Alonso's club at the time — where Martin Skrtel decided to launch an assault on Jo... however on this occasion the Liverpool defender escaped without punishment. And since that incident, Jo has been unable to play football well (although, he barely able to before-hand...)

  1. There is no room in this game anymore for the so called "Hard Men". Nobby Stiles, Vinny Jones, Roy Keane; who was a very skilled player, etc. are dinosaurs of a what should be a by-gone era. De jong should have been sent off. Hard and skilled is fine, but going out to cripple a player and end his career is pathetic. There is nothing to admire about this kind of player. Eusebio had a short career because he was constantly having the crap kicked out his legs by just this kind of player. The men from Australia and New Zealand did well, I enjoyed watching them play, and hope the're back in 2014. Cheers!

    1. If we saying de jong is a disgrace for apparently trying to end someones career then an apparently skilled Roy Keane is worse, ever seen the tackle on Haaland that actually did end his career, educate yourself.

  2. It's a good point, MJN, but given the hystrionics some of these players get up to, it is good to give them something to whinge about once in a while - the boy who cried wolf and all that!

  3. MJN49 You enjoyed watching the Aussies play. Does that include all the over the top stud showing tackles as well. Alonso fakes enough now he has a reason to moan. Keep the game hard and strong get rid of the stupid balls and diving make the game realistic again. If the tackles bad enough its a red card. If its not Blame the Ref!

  4. This was just a thuggish game from one team that knew it was outclassed from before kickoff and decided it's only route to glory would be to injury the other teams players.

Spain is the deserved winner. If the Netherlands wanted it then they should have fought harder for it.

  5. De Jong is a great asset so long as he plays "hard but fair", which he does most of the time (for City at least). Aswell as being thuggish and all the rest though, the tackle on Xabi Alonso was pure stupidity. It was a clear red card offence, and he knew it. With 10 men Holland would have been slaughtered.

  6. De Jong is an asshole. Not the first time his inadequate skills makes him lose his temper and try to injure another a player. Good riddance to the filth.
