City's Ever-Changing New Kit

The main criticism of the new home kit is the simple fact that we have one! It's the fifth new shirt in as many years, and when you include all the changes to away and third kit too (there were nine different kits used in the three seasons before this one), it becomes an expensive exercise at the beginning of each season.

From top-left: This seasons new kit, 2009-10 home kit, 2008-09 home kit, 2007-08 home kit, 2006-07 home kit, 2004-06 home kit...

The last time we used a home kit for consecutive seasons was back in 2004-05 and 2005-06. Isn't this something we used to take the piss out of the Rags for?

Hopefully, Umbro can use common sense and announce that this one will be in for a while. I mean, how many times can you improve on a sky blue and white shirt?

  1. You make a good point. I have three boys who are all City fans and it will cost me a small fortune to get them the latest strip. Of course, they don't need to have the new kit but we all know the kind of pressure they will face at school if they are wearing last year's colours. I thought that English clubs signed up to a code of conduct or something to limit the changes to their kits, what ever happened to that? Last season's kit was an outstanding success and its a shame that City feel the need to tamper with it -- if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

  2. i agree with the above posted comment, last seasons kit was one of the best kits, probably the best kit since the classic 70's look and should be kept for a minimum 3 seasons so we are not seen to be ripping off the fans, its not a case of generating revenue anymore so why not concentrate on getting it right for the fans, get one classic design and keep it....

  3. I have 2 young lads, but I disagree - tell me where can you buy a top that will just wash & wear, wash & wear, wash & wear, ok it may have the odd pull/snag or two but unless they grow out of them they just go on n on, great value for money and I for one dont mind buying them - however on this ocassion there was no need to change an already perfect shirt!

  4. "we all know the kind of pressure they will face at school if they are wearing last year's colours"...?

If you've brought your kids up to expect a new one every time it's released then more fool you. But aren't they perfect Birthday/Xmas presents? If the kid can't wait until then, well, tough.
But I don't get all this bleating about being ripped off and it not generating revenue... The club MUST make more money to be able to eventually break even... and that's got to come from more fans spending more money. Fairly simple really.
Personally I prefer the new one based on the pic, but intrigued about what the rest of the kit including the away, will look like...? Is maroon coming back?

  5. An interesting point that last comment raises. I remember last year's kit going on sale for a tenner, and the one previous was as cheap as £5 at one point. So I'd say the club is making conservatively £20 a pop. Of course, we could all wait until it goes on sale, but that's not what this capitalist world has trained us to do... ;)

  6. I think the person who made the comment about making kids wait for their birthday obviously doesn't have any kids -- and probably doesn't live in Manchester. If they did, then they'd know that there is tremendous pressure on the local school kids to be wearing the latest club colours. Having to wait, say, 8 months (as my son would have to) for his birthday would not go down very well at all. All parents are asking is for a bit of common sense and there was supposed to be a charter that clubs signed up to in order to stop the exploitation of fans -- especially families on lower incomes. Would it be too much to ask for a kit to be kept for a couple of seasons? Surely not -- especially one that was so universally praised by the fans.

  7. Did someone mention maroon? Yes please! City has never really settled on a secondary club colour (unlike United's use of black). The light blue and maroon combination work really well and were used in our most successful years (60s, early 70s). More recently, City has used dark blue as a secondary colour and that, in my opinion, doesn't really work that well. Bring maroon back and use it as the main colour in our away kit too!

  9. Last seasons 3 new kits were down to changing maker -Umbro - and having a new sponsor -Etihad.
The 3rd kit (White with red/black stipe) is being kept for next season. The new home and away shirts this year will be kept for 2 seasons. It will then continue to change in alternate years. Hopefully Umbro and Etihad will be a long term thing.

  10. i think our next away kit should be green and gold! now wouldn't that confuse the rags fans? ha ha

  11. Maroon is an excellent second colour and reminds me of the Bell, Lee, Summerbee era. Go for it Umbro!

  12. It is practically the same price to go to 1 game as buy the shirt. The money that the owners are spending on the stadium, the local area and the players make me think I can live with a new shirt every year maybe even two! For Aussie fans it must be great to rub UTD's fans nose's in it with these signings alone I mean Boatang (full young German International) Or Smalling (Fulham reserve). The shirts have gotta be worth every penny! Tick follows tock.

  13. The shirts are superb quality, look good, and cheaper than they used to be! They're not made out of plastic like they were previously, and I think we've got one of the best kits in the league (the black one was fantastic).
Compare that to here in Australia where if you want a Rugby League shirt, plastered in advertising, you're going to pay 160 dollars or 90 pounds, or even for a Sydney FC jersey - 130 dollars = 75 quid. And the team is crap :)
